GREAT LAKES NAVAL TRAINING CENTER — $57.00
Enjoy a narrated tour of the base. Authorized in 1904, Great Lakes Naval Training Center welcomed its first recruit in July 1911. During World War I, the base was a major recruit training center and in World War II, Great lakes was one of the Navy’s most important centers for both basic and advanced training. You will see the training facilities and the historic buildings designed by Jarvis Hunt, a noted architect, in the Romanesque style. Hunt used the motif of the bow of a sailing ship in the buildings. It can be seen above the doors and even in the brass handles of the doors. A memorial service for the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt will be held at Great Lakes. Enjoy lunch in the Port O’Call restaurant with its views of Lake Michigan. You will have a buffet of a bountiful assortment of deli meats and cheeses, including roast beef, turkey, salami, honey ham, Swiss and American cheese. This will be complimented by a variety of fresh breads, sandwich rolls, and assorted condiments and paired with Chef’s soup du jour, a relish tray, potato salad and chips. Cantigny is the country estate of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, former editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. This 500 acre public park was left by the Colonel to the people of Illinois. The 35 room mansion is filled with European antiques, paintings, rare books, and Asian art. The house is set in manicured gardens with a rose collection, numerous formal designs, and the Idea Garden. Also visit the First Division Museum commemorating the distinguished service of men and women who have served our nation since its birth. The museum portrays the history of the 1st Division, known as the Big Red One, of the U.S. Army. Lunch will be a box lunch at Cantigny in the Café. Then tour Naper Settlement, which is a living history museum telling the story of life in northern Illinois throughout the 19th century. You will see how a small town was transformed from a pioneer outpost to a bustling turn-of-the-century community.
